Wassily Kandinsky – poster boy of abstract art

Kandinsky was born in Moscow in the mid-1800s and began his artistic career at the age of 30. He worked primarily in Germany and France, which has established the German spelling of his name as the most recognized. In addition to painting, Wassily Kandinsky was a devoted art theorist and published several influential writings on art and color theory. 

Like Hilma af Klint, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, and other abstract artists of his time, Kandinsky was strongly influenced by theosophy and the exploration of the inner world. The focus shifted from depicting objects to embodying inner "abstract" forms and colors. Color no longer needed to correspond to nature but could be used to express emotions or simply color itself. 

Kandinsky consistently remained at the forefront of art and developed his technique and style throughout his life. He traveled to where art was breaking new ground and taught at the Bauhaus School of Art and Architecture from 1921 to 1933. 

Vasilij Kandinskij (as his name is spelled in Swedish) has gone down in history as the great master of abstract art. He has had an enormous influence on subsequent art movements, from abstract expressionism to art informel.
