Paul Cézanne – from Impressionism to modern art

Paul Cézanne is regarded as one of the great innovators of painting, with his artistic career encompassing many different periods and artistic styles. He began as a realist painter, but this phase was short-lived in Cézanne's life. Inspired by artists like Monet, Pissarro, and Manet, he began exploring Impressionism and new ways to break the rules of art in the 1860s. However, it wasn't until the 1890s that Cézanne's art began to receive real attention. 

Like all groundbreaking artists, Cézanne continued to develop his painting throughout his life. Not only is he counted among the great post-Impressionists alongside artists like van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, he also paved the way for abstract art. Cézanne had a vision of capturing the essence of the subject, leading him to move away from the figurative towards other forms of expression, including abstractions. 

In Cézanne's paintings, one can see how he played with perspective, using different viewpoints in depicting the same object. This bold stylistic approach made a profound impression on artists like Picasso, Braque, and Matisse, who later developed art styles such as Cubism, Fauvism, and modernism.
