Hokusai – the great master of Japanese painting
Katsushika Hokusai was born over 250 years ago in Edo-period Japan. Today, he is regarded as one of Japan's greatest artists, and his influence cannot be overstated. Hokusai is remembered as the artist who revitalized Japanese art and helped spread it beyond Japan's borders.
Hokusai was classically trained in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and primarily worked with woodblock prints, screen prints, and painting. Despite drawing influences from many sources, he remained faithful to classical motifs: Fuji, daily life, myths, and natural scenery.
His most famous images come from Fugaku Sanjurokkei, a series of 36 views of Mount Fuji from various distances and perspectives. It is within this collection that we find "Under the Wave off Kanagawa" – one of the most reproduced images in world history.
Hokusai's free approach to colors and perspectives made a profound impression on European painters in the latter half of the 19th century. Artists like van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec, and Monet were great admirers, and Japanese techniques found their way into much of their art. This influence is particularly evident in van Gogh's later works (such as Almond Blossoms).
