Depeche Mode is an English electronic band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The original lineup consisted of Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar), Andy Fletcher (keyboards), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, main songwriter since 1981), and Alan Wilder (drums, keyboards, bass guitar). Gore took over as the main composer and producer after Clarke's departure in 1981; Wilder left the band in 1995. Depeche Mode's founding members are Dave Gahan (vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1981), and Andrew Fletcher (keyboards). Depeche Mode's last album with singer David Gahan before he was fired was Music for the Masses; he was succeeded by Alan Wilder (drums, keyboards, bass guitar). Gore once again took on the role of songwriter and producer after Clarke's departure. Wilder left the band five years later following a disagreement with Gore. Other members who have recorded with the band include Alan Greewood and recording engineer Flood, who often served as producer from Construction Time Again onwards.
