How to. Paint your frames

How to. Paint your frames

Stylish frames are almost as important as the motifs themselves, at least that's what we think at Posterton. We love everything from classic white, black, silver and gold frames to lovely wooden varieties. But why stick only to classic models when you can fill your home with frames in all the colors of the rainbow? If you're eager to add a creative touch to your frames, you can paint them yourself. Painting frames is easy, and many craft and hobby stores sell beautiful paints and varnishes suitable for both metal and wood frames.

Perhaps you've bought a new stylish poster and want to paint a frame in a matching color? Or maybe you have an old frame that you want to give a new lovely hue? We help you get started by guiding you on how to paint a frame in three simple steps. We also share our most creative tips on how to paint your very own creative frames.

How to Paint a Frame in 3 Simple Steps

With the right equipment and a bit of creativity, you can easily transform an ordinary frame into a work of art. Below, we guide you on how to paint frames yourself—all you need to do is follow these three steps.

1. Choose a Color

The first step is to choose the right color, and by that, we mean the right shade, but also a color that works for the frame you've decided to paint. If painting over an existing color, you should first use a primer. Also, make sure the paint is suitable for the frame's material, such as wood or metal. The exact shade is entirely up to you!

Tip: Create a stylish gallery wall with frames in a variety of colors. Colorful frames often look even better together.

2. Embrace Creativity

Once you have all the materials and tools you need, it's time to let your creativity flow freely. There are many ways to embellish your new or old frames. You can paint the entire frame in one solid color or fill it with dots, stripes, or other patterns. Just make sure to let the paint dry between each coat. You'll find more creative tips further down the page!

Important: Paint the frames on a suitable surface to protect floors and tabletops from paint.

3. Protect Your Work

Once you've finished painting your frames, it's important to protect your masterpiece. A clear polyurethane coating prevents the paint from peeling or fading over time. Make sure to apply the coating in a well-ventilated area and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How to Make Your Frames Even More Creative

Filling your walls with beautiful posters has become increasingly popular, but sometimes it can be difficult to find a stylish frame that perfectly matches your poster. At Posterton, you'll find a wide range of posters and frames in various materials, colors, and sizes. However, if you want to add even more color or creative patterns, painting the frames is perfectly doable. Below are our best tips on how to give your frames a completely new look with simple means.

Colored Edges

Give the frames more life by painting the edges in a completely different color. You can either leave the rest of the frame in its original color or first paint a base in a lovely shade. Then paint the edges in a completely different color. Choose two contrasting colors for an extra eye-catching result.

Gold and Black

Do you have a white or wooden frame that you'd like to make a bit more luxurious? Paint the picture frame in gold and then paint the inner edge black. The black inner edge adds depth and makes the motif stand out more.

Tip: At Posterton, you can also buy ready-made black and gold frames.

Paint Only the Inner Frame

We mentioned earlier that you can paint the inner frame in a different color, and this is actually a very creative tip. If you have an old frame at home that you'd like to put your own stamp on, paint the inner frame in a lovely color. Choose a color that complements the motif that will be in the frame.

Paint Different Sides

Paint each of the frame's four edges in different colors! It might sound a bit crazy, but we promise a really delightful result and a completely new impression for your frame!
