One tip is to first lay out the pictures on the floor in the layout you envision for the wall they'll hang on. This will give you a better idea of whether the wall has enough space for the gallery and which layout suits it best.
Often, one or two pictures are enough to fill the empty space on the wall in the dining room or above the dresser in the hallway, but sometimes that little extra is needed.
