Preparations Before Hanging

To ensure the hanging process goes smoothly, some planning is required. Measure and mark with a pencil where you want the pictures to hang and where the screw or hook should be attached. A spirit level will help you ensure it's straight.

How to Hang Pictures on Concrete Walls?

Below, we go through three methods you can use when hanging pictures on a concrete wall. Which option suits you best?

  1. Hang a Picture with a Concrete Wall Hook

There are hooks specifically designed for concrete walls. These look like small plastic hooks with pins that you hammer into the wall. The size of the hook is important. If you’re hanging a larger picture, you’ll need a slightly larger hook that can handle the weight, or possibly several hooks to support the picture together.

Concrete hooks cannot hold very heavy pictures. However, they are very convenient to use as you don’t need to drill holes in the wall. The only tool you need is a hammer.

Can you really nail into a concrete wall?

Generally, you can’t nail into a concrete wall. The material is a so-called “dead” material and lacks elastic properties. Concrete can crack if you nail into it. However, you can nail in a concrete hook. The small pins on the hook are very thin and slide into the concrete imperceptibly.

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Measure where the hook should be placed and make a mark.

  1. Tap the pins lightly before placing them against the wall so they come away from the plastic.

  1. Hold the hook with the actual hook against the mark. This way, the hanging device on the back of the picture will sit right on the hook.

  1. Hammer the hook into the concrete wall. Make sure to hammer the small nails in properly and check that it is secure before hanging the picture.

2. Hanging a Picture with Adhesive Nail

If you want to make it even easier, you can use adhesive nails. This method of hanging pictures on a concrete wall is very convenient to use and usually provides a stable and reliable result. These nails can support pictures weighing up to 2 kilos.

Another advantage of adhesive nails is that they don’t leave marks and you attach them to the wall using polymer chains.

3. HANGING A PICTURE WITH PLUGS AND SCREWS

If you’re hanging a slightly larger and heavier picture on a concrete wall, it’s better to use plugs and screws. You will need a concrete drill to make a hole in the wall into which you will then place a plug. With this method, the holes in the wall will be significantly larger. However, the heavier picture will hang securely without the risk of falling.

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Measure where the picture should hang.

  1. Then proceed to pre-drill a hole in the concrete that matches the width and length of the plug.

  1. Drill a hole deep enough that almost the entire screw goes into the hole.

  1. Now it’s time to insert the plug. If the whole plug doesn’t go into the hole, you can tap the last part in with a hammer.

  1. Screw in the screw using a screwdriver or drill. The screw should go almost all the way in.

Keep in mind…

The picture should not wobble; it should hang closely against the wall. If you’re using a hanging device with wire, thread, or cable, you may need to shorten it so the picture can hang closer to the wall.
